Breaking the ice in a conversation: abstract words prompt dialogs more easily than concrete ones

چکیده
Abstract domains of knowledge may have social origins. However, whether abstract concepts (ACs) also differentially affect communicative interaction and conversation has not been explored. Here, we studied ACs’ functions by collecting in an Italian English sample, ratings for concrete concept (CC) ACs related to three main dimensions: communicative/pragmatic [i.e., Openness Negotiation (ON), Easiness Start a Conversation (ESC)], semantic/metacognitive Social Metacognition (SM) – perceived need others, Word Confidence (WC), Contextual Availability (CA)], emotional–experiential (i.e., Pleasantness, Valence, Familiarity). Overall, participants judged it was easier start conversation, the more pleasant, familiar, positively valenced were rated concepts. Crucially, at lower values component Familiarity Pleasantness Valence sample), there advantage over CCs ESC. Moreover, higher on SM, ON, WC CA. Notably, both with ESC dimension belonged Self-Sociality subcluster. The results offer new insights into pragmatic aspects linked use.

Dictionary of Abstract and Concrete Words of the Russian Language: A Methodology for Creation and Application
The paper describes the first stage of a project on creating an electronic dictionary with numerical estimates of the degree of abstractness and concreteness of Russian words. Our approach is to integrate data obtained from several different sources: text corpora, psycholinguistic experiments, published dictionaries, markers of abstractness (certain suffixes) and a translation of a similar dict...
متن کاملConservatives are more easily disgusted than liberals
The uniquely human emotion of disgust is intimately connected to morality in many, perhaps all, cultures (Rozin, Lowery, Imada, & Haidt, 1999b). We report two studies suggesting that a predisposition to feel disgust (‘‘disgust sensitivity’’) is associated with more conservative political attitudes, especially for issues related to the moral dimension of purity. In the first study, we document a...
متن کاملContextual Characteristics of Concrete and Abstract Words
In this work we investigate commonalities and differences between the semantic representations of concrete and abstract words using human judgments and distributional semantics. We tackle the following questions: a) Does distributional similarity imply similarity in concreteness vs. abstractness? b) How do concrete and abstract context words co-occur with concrete and abstract words? c) Are our...
متن کاملConversation around documents: more than threading
INTRODUCTION Besides being a great repository of data, the Web is a space for discussion. More and more systems that aim to support distributed group activities are being developed e.g., Yahoo groups and Google groups. Most of these systems offer an option that allows their members posting messages and therefore discussing different topics. These discussions appear mainly in the form of text, t...
متن کاملComprehension of concrete and abstract words in semantic dementia.
The vast majority of brain-injured patients with semantic impairment have better comprehension of concrete than abstract words. In contrast, several patients with semantic dementia (SD), who show circumscribed atrophy of the anterior temporal lobes bilaterally, have been reported to show reverse imageability effects, that is, relative preservation of abstract knowledge. Although these reports l...
